SBN Website Optimization:
Google Business Profile & Local SEO

Overview

SBN’s Google Business Profile had been largely untouched since the organisation’s founding — the primary category was incorrectly set, the profile was missing key information, and after six years of operation the organisation had accumulated just two Google reviews. Local SEO was treated as a standalone workstream: the GBP was rebuilt from scratch, NAP consistency was established across platforms, and a review acquisition strategy was implemented to grow SBN’s reputation in local search.

Profile Setup & Optimization

The profile’s primary business category had been incorrectly set from the outset. This was corrected to “Non-profit organization” — the category most accurately reflecting what SBN is, and the one most likely to surface the profile in searches made by prospective participants and donors.

Five secondary categories were then added to broaden visibility across the full range of searches SBN’s communities are likely to run:

  • Hiking club
  • Environmental organization
  • Outdoor activity organizer
  • Social services organization
  • Youth Social Services Organization

An optimized business description was written to cover all six programs, three service counties, SBN’s key accessibility features — free transportation, bilingual naturalists, all equipment — and the organization’s founding year and mission.

Contact, Location & NAP Consistency

SBN’s website URL, correct contact information, and physical address were added to the profile — verified to match exactly what appears on the website to ensure full NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency. Operating hours were added.

All service areas were configured across the Bay Area, with specific attention to the low-income South Bay neighbourhoods SBN’s programs are built to serve.

Services

The Services section of the profile was updated to include all six of SBN’s program offerings, each with a keyword-informed description and pricing. For example:

Community Nature Hikes | Free | “Join our free monthly naturalist-guided hikes on the first Saturday exploring the California Coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, and San Francisco Bay. Open to adults and families, these 3.5–5.5 mile adventures include lunch, all equipment, and expert nature education. Build community while discovering Bay Area nature.”

This ensures that anyone viewing the profile — whether on Google Search or Google Maps — can see SBN’s full program offering without navigating away.

Photo Optimization

A library of photos was uploaded to strengthen the profile’s visual presence, sourced from events across the community programs. All photos were uploaded with SEO-optimized file titles to improve visibility in local search and Google image results.

Google Review Strategy

Upon audit, SBN had two Google reviews since its founding in 2019. In January 2026, three Google Review Request email templates were created — one per community program — designed to be sent to participants following each community event.

Each template is written around the specific event attended, making the review request feel timely and personal rather than generic. Each email includes a CTA button linking directly to SBN’s Google review page to reduce friction.

Bing Places for Business

SBN’s Microsoft Bing Places for Business account was synced with the Google Business Profile to ensure consistent business information across platforms. All details were verified for accuracy and consistency across all online directories.

What This Made Possible

Before this work, SBN was effectively invisible in local search. The profile was miscategorized, incomplete, and generating no meaningful interactions. Rebuilding it from the ground up — correct categories, complete information, full service area coverage, photo library, and a structured review strategy — gave the organization a local search presence that accurately represents what it is and who it serves.

NAP consistency across the website and the GBP ensures that every signal Google receives about SBN points to the same information, reinforcing rather than diluting the profile’s authority. And the review request email system created a repeatable mechanism for growing SBN’s reputation in local search over time — one that compounds with every community event.
